Survived another social
Well, we survived another NWSFS social at the house. And less than two weeks after moving back in, too :-) Not that the job is quite finished yet- some of the drawers still need adjusting, and the lighting isn't finished yet. But it was enough to be workable. I think we had on the order of ~30 people there. Got a co-worker (plus his wife and kid) to show up, they had fun. Much consuming of burgers and dogs; although we've got a lot of leftover bread (next year I have to remember get mainly whole wheat bread, instead of splitting the sorts). Thanks to everyone who showed up, it was a blast. Current Mood: tired | | Wednesday, May 9th, 2012 | | 4:32 pm |
Back in the house
Yvonne and I are back in the house. Actually, moved back in Sunday night. The job isn't entirely finished- some of the drawers and doors in the kitchen need to be adjusted, the undercabinet lights are still on order, and the back yard is still a mess. And we've got a week and a half to get it put together for the NWSFS social. Wee! Current Mood: busy | | Tuesday, February 21st, 2012 | | 9:09 pm |
The books have arrived
This year's shipment of books for NWC (from DAW) have arrived. Picked them up this morning from the delivery box in Lynnwood, put them into the SWOC unit to await the stuffing party. Two pallets this time, a lot less than last year, thank goodness. I don't think we could have survived another nine-pallet load. Here they are where the truck dropped them off...can even read the shipping address. And where they ended up. Current Mood: accomplished | | Friday, January 27th, 2012 | | 9:05 pm |
15 years?
At this week's group meeting, got another service award packet. For being with the company for fifteen years. Not that they give you much- a printed paper thingie, a little pin, and a code for picking a gift out of the service award store (variety of misc things, looks to be in the $60 range). Has it really been that long? Geeze. Current Mood: calm | | Thursday, January 12th, 2012 | | 8:45 pm |

Halloween 2011
Had 150 Trick-or-treaters in Lynnwood on Monday. Down a bit from last year. Probably due to it being on a weekday. Decorated the house, mostly the usual stuff: Added the work light on the front of the spider, the orange bulb under the bay window, and a blacklight off to the side that didn't really do much. As usual, the photo is rather washed out; the eyes were a lot yellower and the lights weren't anywhere near that bright. Worked out pretty well. North side fence finished
Finally finished with the path/fence/wall on the north side of the house. That whole end was dug up in 2008 for the big foundation repair/piling project, and I've been working on it over the summers ever since. An overall view from the outside. The old fence did not have a gate, have been wanting one, mainly because the access to the back yard was so poor without it. The fence is a bit taller (4" instead of 3'), and the posts go a lot deeper (old posts were 8" deep, these ones are 2'. 3' for the posts holding up the arbor). And they are set in 10" form-tubes (12" for the arbor posts); bottom half of the form-tubes is full of gravel (hopefully for drainage) the top half with concrete. Formed the top of the concrete into a cone, so water won't pool up around the wood. Close-up of the arbor. I wanted a cross-piece over the gate, to keep the gate post from leaning, and the only way I could think of to make it decorative was to make an arbor out of it. I wouldn't want to let any vines grown on it, they'd grow the gate closed. It turned out pretty well. I think it's a bit overbuilt- there's a 4x4 in the center, a 2x6 on each side, and 4x4 crosspieces. The crosspieces are made of bits of the old fence. Each piece was painted before being installed (the fence posts are painted all the way down). Looking from the other side, towards the park behind the house. Slightly better view of the new kinnikinnick that replaced the heather. Not that I have anything against heather, but it needs to be watered during a dry summer. Kinnikinnick doesn't. From the inside; the retaining walls are also new, the path along the side of the house used to be a lot narrower. The gate was made out of a kit. The kit was meant to open in, not out, and for taller fences, so it took a little modification to make it work here. Another view of the retaining wall. While driving the stakes that hold this wall up, I hit the water line. Had to dig it up and get a plumber to patch it. The path on the north side. This is where the big trench was done in 2008 so concrete could be poured to fix up the foundation on that side. After that was over, I ran drainage pipe through here (the back yard drains into the storm sewer now), dug up the first foot or so of dirt, filtered out the rocks, mixed in manure/compost, and put the plants back. The path is covered by the smaller rocks that were filtered out. One of these days I should put pavers on that path. Current Mood: accomplished | | Monday, August 22nd, 2011 | | 9:04 pm |

Do I have a Fred?
Walking around the Everett plant this week, Daniel and I spotted something a bit odd: The pedestrian walkways are marked with the usual symbol of a stick-figure-like person walking. One of them had a bit of graffiti added. While that would be unremarkable in a city or on a college campus, it's practically unheard of inside the plant fence (was along the area where the 767 tankers will be towed out of the building). What made it really odd was the content of the artwork: Eyes, nose, a mouth, and a name. The name: "Derf". Nobody on the west coast would think much of that, but VTSFFICians may remember the Fred-spelled-backwards jokes during Whoman filming. Current Mood: amused | | Sunday, June 5th, 2011 | | 12:50 am |
Got back from X-men movie
Didn't realize it would be so long, but it didn't feel long. Liked it. Generally agree with smarier's review. Although, I do wonder...could some of Mystique's scales have been knocked off when fighting in the woods, and grown up into Smurfs? How long does it take to grow three apples tall, anyhow? None of us spotted Stan Lee. I'm sure he was in there someplace. Current Mood: silly | | Friday, April 22nd, 2011 | | 10:52 am |
NWC loaded in fine
Well, load-in went well; nothing was dropped, and nobody crushed :-) Although Monday night I had an odd dream...involved people throwing books at me while Weird Al was playing. No idea where that came from :-) Looks like reg is selling well, hopefully the con will sell out over the weekend. Current Mood: accomplished | | Monday, April 18th, 2011 | | 12:23 pm |
Stuffing is stuffed
Stuffing party went pretty well yesterday: the Olympic room is full of books and boxes. No real problem, didn't even run out of boxes, although that was mainly because we brought more reserve boxes than ever before. Many thanks to the stuffers. Although, next year, I need to remember to arrange for a few people to show up early. There weren't enough of us to unload the boxes at the hotel; probably because there wasn't an IT checkout going on at the time. Hopefully tomorrow's Tuesday south run will go as smoothly. Pre-stuffing
Day before stuffing party- had to do more prep-work than average, since the storage unit closes earlier on Sundays now. So, the steel carts are wrapped, the tires on the hand trucks are inflated, and the misc tools and between-con supplies at the storage unit have been sorted and put into their 'do not bring to con' containers. We've got a lot of books to stuff, hopefully we'll have enough boxes to put all the reg packets in. Yvonne's getting her CD's ready; as normal, she'll be DJing the stuffing party. Join the minions
Finally back from Tcon. Had a lot of fun. /tcon28/ The three of us (myself, dpawtows, and ypawtows) did a group costume this year. Minions. Minions. Wore the outfits for most of move-in on Friday, and quite a bit of Saturday. Turned out to be a reasonably practical con costume- work clothes, work gloves, and eye protection! Want to try the same outfit at NWC, although probably not during main move-in. Probably Friday (would it be appropriate at the lifer's dinner?) or Saturday. At the last social a few other people were talking about doing minions. We need to co-ordinate so we can all do them at the same time at least once, and get photos taken with Gru- er, smarier. (Shawn- think you could find a reasonable approximation of the scarf/sweater/coat?) And we need to find better goggles. This time we used simple safety glasses, but true goggles might work better. | | Thursday, December 30th, 2010 | | 6:07 pm |

Don't anger the kitty
Getting out of my aunt's van. Mobbed by her two goldens; tried to distract them by pointing and telling them to chase the cat. Said cat was not amused; she snarled while bearing claws and teeth at me. I am, of course, talking about ypawtows. I may regret that remark. Pawtowskis east, 2010 edition
For those back east, here are our travel plans for the REAL holiday: Thursday the 23rd, we fly to Louisville KY to spend Xmas with our aunt. This will be the third time we've attempted to fly into Louisville. We have yet to make it, primarily due to weather issues. At least, they don't seem to be calling for Seattle-area blizzards next week. I don't think we know anyone in KY. Our aunt will be renting a leg caddy for dpawtows. Wed, the 29th, we'll get a rental car and drive to Roanoke, to see Yvonne's parents. Typically, we stop halfway there and have dinner with rattrap; am hoping the same arrangement will work this year. Will be in VA from the evening of the 29rd, and flying back to Seattle on Mon Jan 3. We're not planning on taking any overnight trips with the Bennetts this year; probably just day trips to local museums and other sights in the area. Possibly including Monticello and the Tank museum in Danville. Anyone interested in joining us? We don't have any ideas for which day yet. As usual, the Bennetts don't do anything much for New Year's. So, if anyone in Bburg is hosting a VTSFFC gathering, let us know. We are assuming there will be at least one gathering at jdunson's place for a City of Heroes game. Will be bringing laptops. Laptops that can actually *play* the game, this time. Card check
Well, the video card problem with my primary desktop has finally been taken care of. Got a new card (Nvidia 460) and a new power supply, and jeffreycornish geojlc came over to put them in. Real rat's nest of power cabling in there now, but at least it all seems to work. Seems to work. City of Heroes doesn't seem to look that much different than it did on the old 8800, though. | | Saturday, November 27th, 2010 | | 5:40 pm |
Computer problems
Well, now the computer is on the blink. Got back from work on Friday, decided to blow off some steam playing City of Heros with Yvonne. About an hour in, the computer locked up. And looks like it was pretty badly damaged- worked on it well into the wee hours and couldn't get it to boot in anything but "safe mode". At work again most of today. Yvonne reported finally getting someplace- she got it into safe mode, disabled the graphics card drivers, and it seems to boot normally; just with a terrible-looking screen. Downloading and installing newer drivers (Invidia 8800) caused a BSOD, so she took the drivers down again. Anyone have any suggestions? Current Mood: frustrated |
